Kim Laursen of Sac City, IA, passed away unexpectedly on his 68th birthday, Thursday, January 5, 2023, at Loring Hospital in Sac City.

Jens Kim Laursen was born on January 5, 1955, to parents Francis and Peggy (Paup) Laursen in Carroll, IA. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sac City, where he was a life-long member serving as an Elder and most recently was elected as a Trustee.

Kim was raised on a farm just outside of Sac City. Kim graduated from Sac City High School with the Class of 1973. After graduation, Kim attended Iowa State University in Ames, IA, where he was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho. In the spring of 1977, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Animal Science and Ag Mechanization.

On February 28, 1976, Kim married the love of his life, Patricia Ann Peterson at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sac City. This union was blessed with two children, John and Jenny. Together they raised their family on a farm NW of town. They started a farrow to finish hog operation and raised pigs for over twenty-five years. John and Jenny had a hand in the day-to-day operations as well, assisting with new births, bedding pigs during some of the worst winter weather, castrating them, cleaning out pens, and even loading hogs before they headed to school. The farm life taught them so much and being able to tend to it alongside their father made for so many great memories and so many lessons learned. Kim was a steward of the land, treating it with respect was important to him. He farmed corn and soybeans fulltime but also worked at NRCS part-time for twenty years. Kim served on the ASCS Conservation Board, was a Trustee for Jackson Township, and was a 4H leader for the Jackson Lads.

From 2009-2019, Kim and Pat were hosts for the annual Farm.Butcher.Table charity event held at their farm. This event brought 80-100 campers to their farm from all over the United States for three days. Kim loved being a part of this, preparing and hosting with Pat. Being able to share a taste, literally, of what farm life is like with people who had never experienced it made his heart so happy.

Kim was a builder of all things. He was a woodworker as well and made many furniture pieces, baseball bats, squirrel feeders, and enjoyed helping Jenny with projects around her home in Minnesota. He restored a Farmall H tractor and always owned a motorcycle. He and Pat would take frequent trips on the motorcycle including a few trips to Sturgis.

He loved his family above all. He was always involved with his children’s events and loved having them by his side farming. Being able to ride in the combine with their dad during harvest was always exciting to them and a memory they will hold in their hearts forever.

Kim loved his community and dedicated his life to improving Sac City. He served as a Sac City School Board member for nine years, a board member of the REC, was a member of the Sac Education Foundation and Sac City Men’s Club.

Kim was a great listener and made the effort to connect regularly with his friends and family. One of his favorite things to do was to take a drive so he could meet with his community and was always listening for ways to help his neighbors.

Kim will be forever missed by all who knew and loved him. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Pat Laursen of Sac City, IA; children John (Laura) Laursen of Chicago, IL, and Jenny (Josh) Jevne of Chaska, MN; grandchildren Margot Laursen, and Nora, Henry and George Jevne; siblings: Kitty (Dale) Drey of Lake View, IA, Kent (Nancy) Laursen of Springfield, MO, and Kelly (Betty) Laursen of Sac City, IA; sisters-in-law Nancy (Larry) Bellcock of Sac City, IA, and Vicki (Bob) Dehner of Vermillion, SD; brother-in-law Mark (Pauline) Peterson of Sac City, IA; father-in-law Dale Peterson of Sac City, IA; many nieces, nephews, other extended family members and friends. Kim was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Peggy; stepfather Cliff Scheffler; and mother-in-law Janice Peterson.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made that will assist in a scholarship they plan to establish in Kim’s memory that will be given to a student at East Sac County that plans to study in the field of agriculture.
