Kids’ Fest Set to Take Over Chautauqua Park June 14

Storm Lake is getting ready to turn Chautauqua Park into one giant playground.

Kids’ Fest returns Sunday, June 14 from noon to 3 p.m., with free family activities sponsored by the City of Storm Lake and King’s Pointe Resort. Children under 12 can pick up a wristband for a free visit to King’s Pointe Waterpark later that afternoon, and older kids can get in for $5.

Mayor Meg McKeon used Monday night’s city council meeting to encourage families to take part. She called the fourth annual event “an afternoon of fun and games and educational activities,” and emphasized that it’s a free, city‑sponsored celebration for all families.

McKeon also highlighted the community effort behind the scenes, noting that local groups and city departments provide much of the programming.

Two interactive magic shows with Mikayla Oz headline this year’s entertainment, with performances at 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. Balloon artist Professor Von Air will also be creating take‑home pieces throughout the afternoon. Local performers from Drishti School of Dance, Deborah’s School of Dance and the St. Mary’s Dance Team round out the stage lineup.

Organizers say the park will be packed with hands-on activities, including a foam party and bubble cannon, a brand new mini golf course, inflatable games, bouncy pony races, sports challenges, spin art and a high striker game for all ages.

City departments will host their own stations. The Storm Lake Fire Department will bring its Fire Safety House and let kids try a fire hose, while Sparky the mascot greets families. The police department will stock the YumVee with treats. Water, Building and Code staff will offer environmentally-themed games and lake protection mascot Freddy the Fish will make his first appearance. The library plans a STEM challenge, and toddlers will have water table play. Kids can also bring a Hot Wheels or Matchbox car for diecast racing.

More than a dozen community groups will take part, offering everything from face painting and lawn games to pollinator activities, yoga, seed planting and GaGa ball. Storm Lake Radio will be on site recording kids’ summer plans for broadcast.

Food trucks will also be stationed at the park for families who want lunch or a cold drink during the event.
