Hernandez Launches Write-In Bid for Storm Lake Mayor

Storm Lake’s mayoral race has no official candidates on the ballot—but Charles Hernandez says that’s exactly why he’s stepping up.

The 40-year-old is now running as a write-in candidate for the Nov. 4 election.

Hernandez has spent the past two decades organizing community events—from March of Dimes fundraisers to autism awareness drives and back-to-school block parties. He says the support he received after jokingly announcing his candidacy pushed him to take the campaign seriously.

Hernandez has watched nearly every city council meeting from the past year, studied Storm Lake’s strategic plans and financial reports, and says he’s committed to learning the process.

His priorities include connecting residents with local government, supporting youth, seniors, and veterans, and bringing more entertainment options to Storm Lake.

Hernandez will host a public question-and-answer session today at 4 p.m. at Veso Coffee in downtown Storm Lake.

He says he’s not running to be perfect—just present.

In the Storm Lake City Council races, incumbent Maggie Martinez is seeking re-election. Challengers Dalton Walker, Don Piercy Jr., and Richard Riner have also submitted petitions. Councilman Kevin McKinney vacated his seat due to health reasons—his position will be filled as a two-year term, with Piercy running for that spot. Councilman Matt Ricklefs declined to seek re-election after serving one term.

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 4.
