UPDATE: Grain Spilled in Train Derailment Near Alta; No Injuries Reported

Crews responded Friday morning to a train derailment in Buena Vista County. The incident happened between Alta and Lake Creek along Iowa Highway 7.

Canadian National Railway reports that six cars left the tracks while a train was servicing a customer and moving toward an elevator. The cars came to rest in various positions, spilling grain onto the ground. Cleanup efforts continued throughout the day Friday.

In a statement to Storm Lake Radio, CN confirmed the derailment occurred around 9:30 a.m. near Alta. The railway emphasized that no dangerous goods were involved, and there were no fires, injuries, or threats to public safety. CN also expressed gratitude to local first responders for their assistance.

Traffic on Highway 7 was affected throughout the day Friday. A portion of the highway was closed Monday morning, but is back open as of 8:45 a.m. The railroad crossing at 60th Avenue remains closed.

The cause of the derailment remains under investigation.
