Glennadine passed away on Thursday, January 26 at Black Hawk Life Care Center in Lake View.–
Glennadine Dettmann, age 105 of Sac City, IA, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 26, 2023, at Black Hawk Life Care Center in Lake View, IA.
Glennadine Maxine Wise was born on April 18, 1917, in Sac County, IA, to parents Lawrence and Mary (Mooney) Wise. She was baptized and confirmed in the First Presbyterian Church in Sac City. She grew up in Sac County where she attended country school and graduated from Sac City High School. She then obtained her teaching certificate and taught country school.
On January 22, 1938, Glennadine married Gerhardt “Gay” Dettmann at St. Peter Lutheran Church in rural Sac City. This union was blessed with three children, Donna, Darla, and Dennis. She and Gay raised their family on a farm just outside of Sac City. Glennadine stayed home to raise the children when they were young and also kept busy helping on the farm. There was a garden to be planted and tended to every spring and summer, followed by canning what was harvested in the fall. Glennadine grew up in 4H herself and was very involved with it again when her children and grandchildren became members. She and Gay enjoyed dancing at area dance halls such as Cobblestone and Lakewood Ballroom back in the day. They were also avid card players and were in several card clubs throughout the years. Glennadine was a great seamstress and sewed many things for her children and grandchildren over the years, yes, even undies! She also enjoyed quilting.
In 1975, the couple moved off the farm and into town. At this time Glennadine was the head cook for the Sac City Community School District, a position she held for over twenty years. She loved her neighbors and always looked forward to the annual Fourth of July neighborhood party. She liked watching birds and was always sure to have feeders out for them. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and a very active Ladies Aid member at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sac City. Glennadine’s faith was deep and was surely what guided her through life. She rarely missed church.
Glennadine was a note taker. She had notebooks everywhere filled with reminders, special dates, and important information. She jotted down on a sheet of paper how she loved living in Iowa because of the change of seasons and she loved the beautiful sunrises and sunsets. She adored her grandchildren and enjoyed helping them with their 4H and FFA projects. This was who Glennadine was. She was the grandma who made sure to be a huge part of her grandchildren’s lives and they adored her for that and always will. She lived a long full life and saw so much during her 105 years. Rest assured she is now in God’s beautiful paradise, alongside Gay, where there is no more pain or suffering. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Glennadine is survived by her children, Darla Hysing of Mesa, AZ, and Dennis E. (Debbie) Dettmann of Sac City, IA; grandchildren: Richard Hysing, LaDonna (Rick) Lutz, Ronda (Patrick) McDonnell, Kara (Bart) Ross, Sara (Tim) Locker, and Andrea (Dave) Spurgeon; many great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other extended family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Gerhardt “Gay” Dettmann; daughter Donna Louise Dettmann; parents Lawrence and Mary Wise; brother Kendrick (Esther) Wise; sister Katherine (Raymond) Kreft; brother-in-law Clifford (Marion) Dettmann; and sister-in-law Arlene (Ed) Deck.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Sac City Senior Citizen’s Center in Glennadine’s memory.
