Former Pocahontas Resident Charged in Payroll Fraud Scheme

The Pocahontas County Sheriff’s Office says a former resident has been charged in connection with a payroll fraud scheme that may have gone on for more than a year.

Authorities report that on Dec. 24, a Pocahontas County business contacted law enforcement after discovering irregularities in its payroll system. Investigators determined that an employee had been fraudulently diverting funds.

Following the investigation, 35‑year‑old Cassandra Weaver of Cleveland, Tennessee — formerly of Pocahontas — was charged with multiple felonies, including ongoing criminal conduct, first‑degree fraudulent practices, first‑degree theft, and second‑degree theft.

The Sheriff’s Office worked with Tennessee authorities to coordinate Weaver’s arrest. She was taken into custody Monday in Tennessee and is awaiting extradition back to Iowa.
