Fire Department Launches Holiday Safety Wreath Campaign

The Storm Lake Fire Department is launching its annual holiday safety reminder with a wreath now on display at the fire station.

The wreath is lit with red bulbs, and the department hopes it stays that way through the season. Each time firefighters respond to a structure fire, one red bulb will be replaced with a white one—a visual cue meant to keep holiday fire safety top of mind.

The department says decorative lighting continues to be a leading cause of winter house fires nationwide, and they’re urging residents to take simple precautions. That includes checking light strands for damage, avoiding overloaded outlets, keeping trees watered and away from heat sources, and turning off lights before leaving home or going to bed. They also recommend using UL‑approved lights and choosing flame‑resistant decorations.

Fire officials say the goal is to prevent fires altogether—and keep every bulb on their wreath glowing red through the holidays.
