A commercial building fire in downtown Cherokee drew more than 40 firefighters yesterday afternoon and caused an estimated $1.2 million in damage.
The Cherokee Fire Department was dispatched around 1:15 p.m. to 219 E. Main St. — the location of the former Don’s Upholstery — after a passerby reported flames coming from the rear of the structure. Crews arrived within minutes to find heavy smoke and active fire, prompting an immediate call for mutual aid.
Firefighters from Aurelia, Meriden and Cleghorn assisted, bringing the total number of personnel on scene to 42. Additional support came from the Cherokee Regional Medical Center Ambulance, Cherokee Police Department, the Cherokee Water and Street Departments, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, Cherokee County Emergency Management and utility crews from MidAmerican Energy and Alliant Energy.
Crews attacked the fire from both the front and rear of the building. Firefighters deployed multiple hose lines, including 2.5‑inch and 1.75‑inch lines, and used a portable monitor to knock down flames. Entry teams attempted interior operations, but extreme heat in the shop area forced one crew to withdraw.
Access challenges and structural concerns complicated the response. A downed power line limited movement behind the building, and firefighters monitored the roof and adjacent structures for potential fire spread. The building contained a large amount of business equipment and combustible material, contributing to the intensity of the fire.
No one was inside when the fire began, and no civilian injuries were reported. Two firefighters were evaluated for heat‑related issues but were not transported.
The Iowa State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause. Officials say the fire does not appear suspicious.
Crews cleared the scene shortly before 5 p.m. Wednesday.
