BVU, Salud Partner on Spanish Workshops to Build Connections

In a city known for its diversity, Buena Vista University and the nonprofit Salud are partnering to help residents connect more deeply with their neighbors.

Weekly Spanish language workshops began January 26 at the BVU Library, offering both beginner and intermediate sessions—and the turnout has succeeded expectations.

BVU Professor of Spanish Dr. Steven Mills says the idea started with a simple request from the community.

The workshops are led by BVU Spanish students, who guide conversations and answer questions. Mills says the first class drew nearly 30 participants, far more than expected.

For Salud, the workshops reflect a mission of ensuring language is never a barrier. Board member Di Daniels says the classes are about more than grammar and vocabulary—they’re about building relationships.

Daniels says the strong turnout shows a growing willingness in Storm Lake to reach across cultures.

The workshops are designed to be practical. Beginners learn basic phrases and expressions, while intermediate participants practice tenses and vocabulary for everyday life. Mills says the format also benefits BVU students, who get to apply their skills in real-world settings.

Sessions run Mondays from 12-12:50 p.m. for six weeks, with the option to extend through the semester. Mills says anyone interested is welcome to join, even if they missed the first two classes.

Daniels believes the value goes far beyond language mechanics.

Mills agrees, noting that in a diverse community like Storm Lake, language learning can strengthen ties across cultures.

The workshops are free and open to all. For questions or to sign up, contact Mills at mills@bvu.edu or 602-386-7125 or Daniels at salud.of.stormlake@gmail.com or 712-299-9863.
