Patients’ experiences during a hospital stay have earned Buena Vista Regional Medical Center (BVRMC) national recognition.
BVRMC is one of 250 hospitals nationwide to receive a five-star rating on a federal patient-experience measure, according to Becker’s Hospital Review. The Storm Lake hospital is one of nine in Iowa included on the list.
The recognition is based on the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems survey, known as HCAHPS. The standardized survey asks patients about their experiences with hospital care, including communication with doctors and nurses, responsiveness of staff and their overall impression of the hospital.
The five-star rating represents the highest score on the survey’s overall hospital rating measure.
The latest ratings reflect surveys collected from Oct. 1, 2024, through Sept. 30, 2025. The federal data was updated in July and publicly released in August 2026.
BVRMC CEO Rob Colerick says the recognition reflects the work hospital employees put into making patients feel comfortable and confident in their care.
Colerick says the hospital aims to make every patient feel valued throughout their experience and that staff members’ compassion, attention and commitment are central to that effort. He says BVRMC is proud to serve as a trusted source of quality care for area communities.
HCAHPS results are publicly reported to help patients compare hospitals using a consistent set of questions and measures. The survey is one way to assess the patient experience, though it does not represent every aspect of a hospital’s performance or serve as a complete measure of clinical quality.
