BREAKING: Des Moines Superintendent Detained by ICE

Des Moines Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Ian Roberts has been detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), according to School Board President Jackie Norris.

The district has not received information regarding the reason for Roberts’ detention or what steps may follow.

In response, Associate Superintendent Matt Smith has been appointed Interim Superintendent, effective immediately. District leadership emphasized its commitment to maintaining educational continuity and support for students, families, and staff during the transition.

Online ICE records indicate Roberts is being held at the Pottawattamie County Jail.

Dr. Roberts began his tenure as the 14th superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools in May 2023. His previous roles include serving as superintendent in Pennsylvania’s Millcreek Township School District and holding administrative positions in St. Louis, Baltimore, Washington D.C., and New York City. He holds degrees from Coppin State University and St. John’s University.

Originally from Guyana, Roberts represented his home country in the 2000 Olympic Games, competing in the 800-meter event.
