An arrest in Sioux City last week has sparked a wave of creativity in Sac City—where manholes are becoming canvases for community art.
On Nov. 7, 46‑year‑old Brandon Bradshaw was arrested for painting flowers on manholes in Sioux City’s Morningside neighborhood. His idea inspired Sac City Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Crystal Hanrahan to launch a contest called “Our Town is Cooler Than Yours.”
Hanrahan says she woke up at 4 a.m. with the idea and reached out to Mayor Scott Bundt an hour later to make sure the project had support.
The contest builds on Sac City’s recent mural projects—including butterfly and angel wings painted downtown this summer. Hanrahan says it all ties into what she calls the “butterfly effect.”
More than two dozen manholes are already spoken for, with artists painting throughout town this week. Safety cones and police patrols will be in place to protect participants.
Hanrahan has also challenged other chambers across Iowa to join in, hoping to see flowers painted in all 99 counties.
The Chamber and local sponsors are covering paint costs, and the prize has grown to $150. Winners will be chosen by community vote on Facebook.
The goal is to have all artwork finished by Sunday, Nov. 16. For details or to get involved, visit the Sac City Chamber of Commerce Facebook page.
