The Alta Park Board is moving forward with plans for a new veterans monument in the city park—an effort Park Board President Raegan Launderville says was inspired by community support and a desire to honor local service members.
The design for the proposed Service Members Memorial incorporates longstanding tributes, including an obelisk already in place that honors those who died in war, and a 1949 plaque donated by the Alta VFW. Launderville says the new monument will feature six chevron-shaped pillars, each representing a branch of the military.
The monument will also be placed near a memorial tree dedicated to Brian Botello, an Alta native who lost his life in 2007 as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Fundraising efforts are expected to begin after a planning meeting scheduled for Sept. 17 with Beck Engineering of Cherokee. Launderville says the board hopes to fund the entire project through donations.
Community response has already been strong, with positive feedback on social media and support from city leaders, says Launderville.
More details on how to contribute will be released following the Sept. 17 meeting.
