Alta Man Sentenced to Federal Prison for Firearm Possession

A Buena Vista County man has been sentenced to federal prison for illegally possessing a firearm.

Twenty-nine‑year‑old Taxavier Ford of Alta received a 30‑month sentence yesterday after pleading guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm. Ford’s prior convictions in Indiana and Iowa barred him from owning any gun.

Court records show the case began with a traffic stop in Storm Lake last March. Officers pulled Ford over for illegal window tint and reported smelling marijuana. During a search, they discovered a loaded firearm tucked into his waistband.

Ford will serve three years of supervised release after his prison term. He remains in U.S. Marshals custody until transfer to a federal facility.

The case was investigated by Storm Lake Police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Sioux City.
