Snowfall totals for the Storm Lake area have now increased according to the National Weather Service. Storm Lake could see 6-13″ of snow with this blizzard event. Higher amounts can be expected to the South/Southwest of the Storm Lake area. Places like Schaller, Ida Grove and Onawa should expect to see 7-14″ of snow with this system. Rates of 1-2″ of snowfall PER HOUR is likely.
Winds continue to be a significant factor in this system. Sustained winds of 30+ miles per hour and wind GUSTS of up to 70 mile per hour are expected. The combination of snowfall totals, and wind will cause MAJOR travel impacts. It is recommended not to travel unless it is necessary at this time.
As rain continues and snowfall begins, and the temperature drops, road conditions will deteriorate rapidly.
Impacts to infrastructure, trees, and power lines will occur with the combination of wind and heavy snowfall. Power outages likely.
