Midgets Sweep Mustangs In Monday Night Hoops

For the second time this season the Newell-Fonda basketball teams played E-L-C, this time around it was last night at Estherville.

The E-L-C girls raced out to a 23-12 lead after the first quarter and went on to defeat the Mustangs 74-58. The Midgets, the top ranked team in 3A, were led by Haylee Stokes’26 points as E-L-C improves to 11-0 on the year. The Mustangs were led by Mary Walker who scored 20and Kierra Jungers added 15.

Coach Dick Jungers said, “This was a tough game for the Mustangs as Estherville Jumped out by 10 and we were playing from behind most of the night. I was pleased that we were able to cut a 15 point lead to 7 with 6 minutes to go in the game, but we were not able to knock down a shot to get any closer. I felt our kids played hard, but we need to make a few more plays to win a game like this. Give Estherville credit, they are very good and they did what they needed to do to win this one. The loss moves the Mustangs to 8-2 on the season”.

The Mustangs are now 8-2 overall.

The Newell-Fonda boys suffered their second loss of the season as E-L-C won 78-69. Carter Sievers scored 33 points in the loss as the Mustangs fall to 6-2 on the year.

The Newell-Fonda teams will play Tuesday night at Saint Mary’s.
