Thanksgiving Safe Driving Campaign Starting Today

The Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau is partnering with law enforcement agencies across Iowa on a Safe Driving Campaign around the Thanksgiving holiday.

The campaign is getting underway today (Tues) and goes through November 28th. According to information provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Iowa DOT, and Iowa Department of Public Safety, in the year 2020, one person was killed every 45 minutes in a drunk-driving crash on roadways nationwide. Wearing a seat belt decreases the chance of death in a car crash by 45-percent.

In 2021, there were 707 crashes and 33 deaths on Iowa roadways in which exceeding the speed limit caused the crash. In Iowa during peak Thanksgiving travel times from November 15th through November 28th in 2021, 11 people lost their lives on Iowa roadways.
