Panthers Win First Game In 1A Tourney Opener

In twelve regular season losses the Saint Mary’s softball team scored 14 runs. In Friday’s 1A tournament opener they plated ten runs in the first inning and went on to beat Ar-we-va 22-14 in a game played at Emmetsburg.

The Panthers sent 14 batters to the plate in that first inning and led 10-2 when the thirty minute long inning was over. After Saint Mary’s scored two more runs in the top of the 3rd inning the Rockets plated 10 runs of their own sending 16 batters to the plate and the game was tied 12-12.

Saint Mary’s would later score three in the 5th, and five more in the 6th inning to take a 20-12 lead and each team scored a pair of runs in the 7th.

The Panthers had 15 hits in the game led by Danika Demers who went 4-for-5 with a walk and four runs scored. The Panthers took advantage of ten walks and nine Rocket errors.

Demers relieved starter Neely Bacon and threw the last five innings to pick up the win.

Ar-we-va finishes the year with a 4-14 record. The win is the first of the year for the Panthers who will now take their 1-12 record to Fonda next Wednesday for a 1A regional quarter-final game against the defending state champions from Newell-Fonda.

The game will be broadcast on KAYL.
