Veso Coffee Earns Small Business Excellence Award

A Storm Lake coffee shop that opened its doors just over a year ago is already being recognized as one of northwest Iowa’s standout businesses.

Veso Coffee, owned by husband-and-wife team Adilene Soto and Ivan Velazquez, received the Small Business Excellence award last Wednesday, Jan. 28, during the Iowa Lakes Corridor Development Corporation’s 15th Annual Business Recognition Luncheon at the Clay County Regional Events Center in Spencer. The luncheon drew more than 330 community leaders, the largest audience in the event’s history.

The Corridor says the annual awards are designed to celebrate businesses across Buena Vista, Clay, Dickinson, and Emmet counties that strengthen the region’s economy and community life, with nominations judged on commitment, impact, and growth. Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake was also honored, earning the Large Business Excellence award.

For Soto, who moved from Arizona and opened Veso in December 2024 after personally renovating the historic downtown building located at 512 N. Lake Ave., the award validates the risks and sacrifices her family made.

Since opening, Veso has become known not only for its coffee and crepes—praised by customers for their quality and creativity—but also for its role as a hub for cultural events and collaborations.

Soto says the recognition belongs to more than just her family.

Looking ahead, Soto says Veso plans to expand its menu, host more events, and continue supporting local artists and businesses.
