Iowa Lakes Community College held a news conference this afternoon, giving an update on the deadly bus crash involving the school’s baseball team that occurred yesterday morning on Iowa Highway 4 near 220th Street, just west of Twin Lakes in Calhoun County.
During the news conference, Athletic Director Troy Larson said the baseball player who was killed in the crash was 19-year-old Carter Johnson, of Rapid City, South Dakota. Johnson was a freshman outfielder for the Iowa Lakes baseball team. He was pronounced deceased at the scene of the accident. According to Lt. Aaron Smidt with the Iowa State Patrol, CPR was performed on Johnson by the student athletes in the van following the bus; they continued to do so until rescue crews arrived on scene. Responders from four different counties responded, and for helicopters were dispatched, with three transporting patients to hospitals in Des Moines .
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash. No other vehicles were involved, although an Iowa Lakes van carrying six people was traveling with the bus.
Iowa Lakes canceled classes Thursday and Friday following the crash.

The crash occurred around 11 a.m. Wednesday leaving more than 30 people injured and one dead.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash. No other vehicles were involved, although an Iowa Lakes van carrying six people was traveling with the bus.
Iowa Lakes canceled classes Thursday and Friday following the crash.
