The Storm Lake Community School District has a five-year graduation rate of 86-percent, according to recently released data by the Iowa Department of Education.
The five-year graduation rate is for the Storm Lake High School class of 2021. The number is calculated by dividing the number of students in the cohort who graduated with a regular high school diploma in five years or fewer by the number of students who transferred in and out of the district during that period.
Storm Lake High School’s four-year graduation is currently 51.6-percent. That number includes all of the district’s charter school students, who typically spend a 5th year preparing for college and career opportunities.
Superintendent Dr. Stacey Cole says the district continues to take great pride in their five-year graduation rate as they help students develop the skills and knowledge they need in the years to come. Dr. Cole says the district’s unique set of circumstances make their four-year graduation rate misleading, but says the charter school does an excellent job preparing students for the future.
The Department of Education also found that Storm Lake’s dropout rate for grades seven through 12 is 3.22-percent, while the nine through 12 dropout rate is 4.29-percent.
