Storm Lake’s public safety agencies have released their February activity reports, showing another steady month call volumes for both police and fire crews and several notable shifts from last year.
The Storm Lake Police Department logged 2,342 service calls in February, slightly below the 2,462 calls recorded during the same month in 2025. Year‑to‑date, officers have responded to 4,747 calls, nearly identical to last year’s pace.
In property- and person-related calls, officers responded to one burglary, two forgery cases, four assaults, and sixteen domestic disturbances. Disturbance calls of all types increased, rising to 12 from just three a year ago. Drug investigations also climbed, with eight cases this February compared to four last year. Harassment reports totaled seven, and officers handled five suspicious‑person calls and four suspicious‑vehicle reports, the latter down from 11 last year.
Traffic activity remained busy. Police conducted 628 vehicle stops, up sharply from 374 last February. They issued 547 traffic warnings, up from 337.
Public service calls included 92 citizen assists, 34 animal complaints, 23 bar checks, and nine welfare checks. Security checks remained one of the department’s most frequent duties, with officers conducting 563 during the month. City code enforcement activity dropped significantly, from 96 cases last February to just two this year.
Police also assisted other agencies throughout the month, including 51 ambulance assists, 10 fire department assists, and 23 assists to the law department.
In the investigations division, detectives completed 110 felony follow‑ups, 105 misdemeanor follow‑ups, and five juvenile follow‑ups. They cleared 17 cases, conducted 22 intelligence investigations, and carried out 26 surveillance investigations. No search warrants were executed in February. Investigators logged just over two hours of overtime for the month.
The department’s K9 unit recorded five alerts, assisted in two arrests, and completed 14 hours of training.
Police collected $300 in parking ticket revenue, $150 for report copies, $70 in pet licenses, and $800 for funeral escorts.
Meanwhile, the Storm Lake Fire Department responded to a range of calls in February. Crews handled one vehicle fire, five brush or field fires, one other active fire, and one gas leak. Firefighters also responded to six false alarms, one carbon monoxide incident, and five other miscellaneous calls. They logged three citizen assists as well.
On the prevention and outreach side, the fire department completed seven commercial inspections, five life‑safety presentations or drills, one fire station tour, and 21 public‑relations and outreach activities.
