The Storm Lake Police Department has released its annual report for 2025, highlighting both progress and challenges in keeping the community safe.
Chief Chris Cole opened the report by calling it “an honor and a privilege to serve this community,” noting that officers responded to more than 48,000 calls for service last year—an average of 133 calls every day.
One of the most encouraging trends was a nearly 12 percent decrease in Part 1 Uniform Crime reports, the most serious category of offenses. Chief Cole credited the reduction to the dedication and daily commitment of his officers, saying their work continues to make a positive impact in Storm Lake.
The report also points to improvements in technology and staffing. The department is currently fully staffed, with the exception of one officer deployed with the military.
Still, 2025 brought significant challenges. Early in the year, officers managed an armed standoff, and the department reported an increase in juvenile arrests. Police leaders say they are addressing youth crime through a mix of enforcement and community-based prevention and intervention partnerships.
Beyond enforcement, the annual report highlights the department’s broader role in the community—from lifesaving awards and detective casework to accident data and outreach programs. Photos included in the report showcase officers at public events.
Chief Cole closed his remarks by acknowledging the difficulty of police work, but also its meaning. He said the department’s strength comes from the support of the community, and pledged continued professionalism, compassion, and dedication in the year ahead.
