Storm Lake’s public safety agencies have released their March activity reports, showing another busy month for both police and fire crews and several sharp shifts from last year’s numbers.
The Storm Lake Police Department handled 2,703 service calls in March, slightly below the 2,769 calls recorded during the same month in 2025. Year‑to‑date, officers have logged 7,450 calls, nearly matching last year’s pace of 7,508.
In property‑ and person‑related calls, officers responded to one burglary, two forgery cases, five assaults, and eight domestic disturbances. Disturbance calls totaled 13, down from 20 last March, while drug investigations dipped slightly to five, compared to six a year ago. Officers also handled four child‑abuse cases, four dead‑body scenes, and two gun or weapon complaints.
Traffic activity remained high. Police conducted 606 vehicle stops, up from 481 last March, and issued 498 traffic warnings. Officers investigated 30 traffic accidents, including two with injuries.
Public‑service calls included 143 citizen assists, 34 animal complaints, 22 bar checks, and 11 welfare checks. Security checks remained one of the department’s most frequent duties, with officers conducting 657 during the month. City code enforcement saw a dramatic drop, with just two cases, compared to 103 last March.
Police also assisted other agencies throughout the month, including 48 ambulance assists, 10 fire‑department assists, and 23 assists to the law department.
In the investigations division, detectives completed 214 felony follow‑ups, 84 misdemeanor follow‑ups, and 14 juvenile follow‑ups. They cleared 30 cases, executed six search warrants, and logged 39 hours of overtime.
The department’s K9 unit recorded three alerts, seven deployments, and 10 hours of training.
Police collected $1,375 in parking ticket revenue, $90 for report copies, $40 in pet licenses, and $600 for funeral escorts.
Meanwhile, the Storm Lake Fire Department responded to a range of calls in March. Crews handled one structure fire, seven false alarms, two carbon‑monoxide incidents, one EMS assist, and three other responses.
On the prevention and outreach side, firefighters completed seven commercial inspections, four life‑safety presentations, three fire‑station tours, and 37 public‑relations and outreach activities.
