Storm Lake Council Appoints Ricklefs to Fill Two-Year Vacancy

Current Storm Lake City Council member Matt Ricklefs will remain at the table.

Last night, the council voted unanimously to appoint Ricklefs to fill the two‑year vacancy created by Mayor‑elect Meg McKeon’s transition from council to mayor. Ricklefs abstained from the vote.

Ricklefs did not seek re‑election in November, telling the council during candidate interviews last week that he was exploring a potential relocation opportunity.

McKeon said his experience and continuity made him the right choice.

Councilperson Maggie Martinez emphasized the value of having someone who understands the breadth of issues facing Storm Lake.

Councilperson Maria Ramos thanked the other applicants—Dalton Walker, Charles Hernandez, and Rick Wimer—for stepping forward.

Ricklefs has served on the council since 2021. He says his priorities include balanced budgeting, expanded daycare access, and more housing options.

He will begin his new two‑year term at the next city council meeting on Jan. 5.

Matt Ricklefs will continue serving on the Storm Lake City Council following his appointment to a two-year term Monday evening. Council members cited his experience and familiarity with ongoing city projects as key reasons for the unanimous vote. (Photo submitted)
