Storm Lake City Council Takes First Step Toward Formation of Childcare Steering Committee

A discussion was held at Monday’s Storm Lake City Council meeting regarding the formation of a local Childcare Steering Committee.

The City of Storm Lake now has a Childcare Strategic Plan on paper, and Development Services Specialist Lee Dutfield said the next step is putting together a committee…

Mayor Mike Porsch said he would like to see the committee be comprised of seven members. Council member Meg McKeon nominated council member Maggie Martinez to be part of the committee, and also said she likes that diverse backgrounds and leadership are being considered in the selection process…

Council member Kevin McKinney agreed that Martinez should be on the committee.

City Manager Keri Navratil said this is just a starting committee…

The City of Storm Lake is accepting applications for the Childcare Steering Committee through the end of April. The council also plans on seeking individuals to be considered. Those who live outside of city limits will be considered if they represent a Storm Lake business. Dutfield said the childcare action plan will begin in July or sooner.

The City of Storm Lake recently obtained land on the west side of town to be used for a possible childcare center in the future.
