King’s Pointe Resort is cleaning up after a sprinkler line burst early Monday morning, flooding part of the ballroom and mechanical rooms and forcing guests to briefly evacuate.
General Manager Amy Von Bank says the break happened around 6:30 a.m. The resort’s fire system immediately detected the pressure change and alerted authorities.
The Storm Lake Fire Department arrived within minutes, ensuring guests were safe. Von Bank says guests were asked to evacuate while crews checked the building.
Only a handful of guests were affected, as Von Bank says most had already left for work. The evacuation lasted less than 20 minutes.
Von Bank says the cause is still under review, but the extreme cold is the likely culprit.
Storm Lake endured a deep freeze beginning Friday, with wind chills plunging between –20 and –35 degrees through the weekend. At 6:35 Monday morning, the National Weather Service reported a temperature of 9 below zero and a windchill of –28.
Von Bank says the damage could have been far worse without the immediate response of staff and contractors.
Crews worked to remove standing water, dehumidify the space, open walls for ventilation, and begin assessing drywall and carpet removal.
Von Bank says the quick action minimized damage, though repair estimates are not yet available.
The resort has temporarily relocated some events to its golf course event center and restaurant while repairs continue. Von Bank expressed gratitude to guests and the community for their patience and support.
