Spencer Hospital Again Named a Top 100 Rural & Community Hospital

Spencer Hospital has earned a national honor for the 11th consecutive year.

The northwest Iowa healthcare facility was again named a Top 100 Rural & Community Hospital by The Chartis Center for Rural Health, marking the only hospital in Iowa to maintain the distinction since the award began.

The recognition places Spencer Hospital among a small group of rural facilities nationwide that have demonstrated consistent excellence in quality, patient outcomes, operations, and financial stability. The rankings are based on the Chartis Rural Hospital Performance INDEX, a data-driven tool widely used by health systems and state rural health offices to evaluate performance.

Chartis officials say this year’s Top 100 hospitals stood out for their resilience and innovation at a time when delivering care in rural communities is more challenging than ever.

Spencer Hospital President Brenda Tiefenthaler says the honor reflects the people behind the care.

Board of Trustees Chair Amanda Bare says the hospital’s consistency is no accident.

Spencer Hospital serves patients across northwest Iowa and southern Minnesota, offering a full-service hospital and a growing network of specialty care — including a comprehensive cancer center, inpatient behavioral health, a multi-specialty surgical center, four primary care clinics, and dialysis centers in Spencer and Spirit Lake.

Hospital leaders say the recognition reinforces their mission to keep high-quality, patient-centered care accessible in the region, and to continue the level of performance that has placed Spencer Hospital among the nation’s top rural facilities for more than a decade.
