By the time Rob Sand took the microphone at Smokin’ Hereford Tuesday afternoon, the room was already full — and he wasted no time telling the crowd Iowa’s political system needs a reset.
Nearly 100 people attended the Storm Lake Town Hall, where Sand — the Democratic nominee for governor running against Republican Zach Lahn — said the state’s two‑party structure is preventing real problem‑solving.
He argued that many of Iowa’s biggest challenges — from water quality to rural investment — remain stalled because the system rewards incumbency over solutions.
Sand laid out a structural overhaul: a single “people’s primary” open to all voters, with the top four candidates advancing to the general election.
He said approval voting would encourage candidates to treat each other — and voters — with respect.
Rural issues dominated the question-and-answer portion of the hourlong event. One attendee asked how small farmers can diversify income and keep land in the family. Sand said renewables, local food systems and expanded grazing programs all play a role.
Another question focused on northwest Iowa’s high cancer rates. Sand pointed to radon, smoking, alcohol use and nitrate pollution as key factors — and said Iowa needs stronger transparency and testing.
He tied cancer concerns to water quality.
Sand also criticized recent legislation limiting the state auditor’s authority, saying watchdogs nationwide warned it would lead to more waste and fraud.
He closed with a call for civic engagement — urging attendees to volunteer, talk to neighbors and help rebuild Iowa’s political culture.
Sand also made stops in Sanborn, Spencer, Sac City and Denison Tuesday as part of his 100 Town Hall Tour.
