Sac County Renews Push for $12.5 Million Jail Bond

The Sac County Sheriff’s Office is once again pursuing a bond to replace the county’s aging jail facility.

Earlier this month, the Sac County Board of Supervisors approved a $12.5 million bond measure aimed at funding the construction of a new jail and demolishing the current 85-year-old structure.

The proposal mirrors last year’s $11 million bond, which was narrowly rejected by voters. This year’s increased cost reflects rising material prices, driven in part by recent tariffs. Project managers estimate that similar construction efforts have seen cost hikes of up to 9 percent.

If approved, the bond would be funded primarily through taxpayer dollars, resulting in a property tax increase—likely comparable to last year’s estimated 5 percent hike. Officials emphasize that the $12.5 million figure represents a spending cap, and any unused funds would remain unspent if construction bids come in lower than expected.

Midwest Construction Consultants, the firm overseeing the project, is urging county leaders to act swiftly if the bond passes, citing the potential for further cost increases if bidding and procurement are delayed.

Newly appointed Sac County Sheriff Jonathon Meyer is expected to lead public outreach efforts in the coming weeks, including informational sessions to help residents understand the scope and necessity of the project.

Voters will have the final say on the bond proposal in the upcoming election.
