Just weeks after being sworn in, new Sac County Sheriff Jonathan Meyer has submitted his resignation.
Meyer, who officially took over the role in late July following the retirement of longtime Sheriff Ken McClure, announced Monday in a letter to the Sac County Board of Supervisors that he intends to step down immediately and return to his previous position as sergeant within the department.
In the letter, Meyer cited personal reasons for the decision, writing, “This decision arises from personal reasons that require my focused attention.”
He acknowledged the challenges of the leadership role and said stepping back would allow him to better balance his circumstances while continuing to serve the department.
Meyer had been recommended for the sheriff’s post by Chief Deputy Katie Stange, and in his resignation letter, he suggested Stange be appointed to succeed him.
The board of supervisors met on Tuesday, but officials did not take formal action on Meyer’s resignation as it was not an agenda item. According to the Sac County Attorney’s Office, Iowa law allows Chief Deputy Stange to assume sheriff duties until the board either appoints a new sheriff or calls a special election.
