Major Gift Boosts Storm Lake Library, Parks

A major gift has been made to the City of Storm Lake.

Mayor Mike Porsch announced at Monday night’s Storm Lake City Council meeting that the John Black Trust has designated a substantial donation for use with Storm Lake Public Library and the city’s parks system.

Black grew up in Storm Lake, graduated from Storm Lake Schools, and later earned a law degree from Drake University. He practiced law in the Des Moines metro area, but remained connected to his hometown throughout his life.

In retirement, Black supported numerous charitable efforts and expressed his belief that “children need a place to read, and a place to play.” His estate has also contributed to local schools and a church.

Black passed away earlier this year at the age of 81.
