Local Citizens Reminded to be Mindful of Fire Hazard Possibilities

With the 4th of July approaching, extremely dry conditions are raising concerns over potential fire hazards from fireworks, or other use of fire in the Storm Lake community.

The City of Storm Lake is reminding citizens to follow fireworks restrictions, and be mindful of weather conditions. Residents are asked to be cautious about using fire for outdoor cookouts, backyard fire rings, or any other uses while surrounding lawns, foliage, and wood material is especially dry and combustible.

Fireworks injuries are also a concern during the 4th of July season. Injuries due to fireworks have increased 25-percent since 2006, and resulted in 11-thousand 500 emergency room cases in 2021 alone across the country. Storm Lake Fire Chief Glen Schlesser says fireworks injuries can involve serious burns, especially to the hands or face.
