Knights of Columbus Turn Cans into Local Support

The Knights of Columbus Council 2326 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake is turning recyclables into community support.

What began as a small-scale can and bottle collection has grown into a year-round effort, with volunteers gathering redeemable items from homes and businesses across Storm Lake. This summer alone, the initiative raised nearly $2,000—funds that have gone toward food banks, youth programs, and emergency assistance for local families.

Collection bins are located at Hy-Vee, Fareway, and near L&G Products on the east side of town. Grand Knight Alex Berry says it’s a simple way for residents to give back, with every can or bottle making a difference.

One recent donation includes $500 to The Bridge, a local nonprofit preparing its Endless Sea Youth Café for fall. The café offers a safe space for students and promotes youth leadership. The gift also kicks off The Bridge’s fall fundraising season, leading up to its annual banquet, slated for Oct. 18 at Buena Vista University.
