The Knights of Columbus Council 2326 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake has directed new support toward local families in need.
The council recently donated $500 to Upper Des Moines Opportunity, funding that comes from its ongoing “Cans for a Cause” recycling project.
For several years, members have collected redeemable aluminum cans, plastic bottles, and glass from residents and businesses, recycling them and turning the proceeds into charitable grants. Collection bins are set up year‑round in the Hy‑Vee and Fareway parking lots, as well as near L&G Products on the east side of town.
Publicity Director Will Swanson says the timing of this donation reflects growing challenges for families.
The Knights meet twice a year to decide where funds go, focusing on organizations that directly impact people in need.
Past donations have supported food programs, youth projects, and health initiatives. Swanson notes that selling the Columbus Club Hall on East Lakeshore Drive has given the group more flexibility to give back.
The council is always looking for more groups and organizations to support. Residents are encouraged to donate redeemable cans and bottles at the designated collection sites. More information is available by contacting kccansforacause@gmail.com.
Meanwhile, the Storm Lake “Fill the Gap” Food Drive continues to expand and has been extended through this week.
Storm Lake City Councilperson Meg McKeon, who initiated the effort alongside fellow City Councilperson Maggie Martinez, confirmed that last week alone, $2,400 in cash donations were converted into Fareway and Hy‑Vee gift cards and distributed to Upper Des Moines and St. Mark’s Lutheran Church.
Volunteers, churches, and local businesses remain engaged, with drop‑off sites across the city and additional campaigns underway to collect food and monetary donations.
