A Newell man convicted on dozens of charges involving sexual abuse, domestic assault, and child endangerment has been sentenced to what amounts to the rest of his life in prison.
Thirty‑eight‑year‑old Cristobal Del Angel Sr. was sentenced last week in Buena Vista County District Court to a term not to exceed 92 years, with a mandatory minimum of 55 years before he becomes eligible for parole. The sentence was handed down by Judge Andrew Smith.
The sentencing follows a five‑day jury trial in December, where jurors found Del Angel guilty on all 31 counts filed by the State. The convictions include second‑degree sexual abuse, continuous sexual abuse of a child, lascivious acts with a child, indecent contact with a child, incest, domestic abuse assault, harassment, child endangerment, and going armed with intent.
The case began on Aug. 31, 2025, when the Buena Vista County Communications Center received a report of an armed individual threatening someone with a knife in the 200 block of Walnut Street in Newell. Deputies with the Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office responded, and during the investigation, additional allegations surfaced involving repeated abuse within the household. Those disclosures ultimately led to the extensive list of charges Del Angel faced at trial.
Prosecutors presented testimony and evidence detailing years of abuse involving both an adult victim and a minor child. Jurors deliberated for several hours before returning unanimous guilty verdicts on every count.
The Buena Vista County Attorney’s Office credited the sheriff’s office—particularly Sgt. William Sankey—for what it called exceptional investigative work in a complex and deeply sensitive case. County Attorney Paul Allen and Assistant County Attorney Ashley Herrig prosecuted the matter.
Del Angel has been transferred to state custody to begin serving his sentence. He will not be eligible for parole until at least the early 2080s.
