Highway 71 Closed; Detour Until Aug. 23

The Iowa Department of Transportation will temporarily close a section of Highway 71 starting today to replace the Canadian National Railroad crossing just north of the Iowa Highway 7 intersection.

While the project is underway, drivers will need to follow a posted detour route: west on Iowa Highway 7; one mile north on Radio Road, or 120th Street; and one east on Milwaukee Avenue, or 600th Street.

The DOT anticipates reopening the area by Saturday, August 23, weather permitting.

Officials from the DOT’s District 3 office warn that the detour may slow travel times. Motorists are urged to drive cautiously, obey posted speed limits and signage, and remember that traffic fines are doubled in work zones.

Crews begin work on the Canadian National Railroad crossing north of the Iowa Highway 7 intersection, prompting a temporary closure of Highway 71 today, Monday, Aug. 18. The Iowa DOT advises drivers to follow posted detours and use caution in the work zone, which is expected to reopen by Saturday, August 23, weather permitting.
