A four-year-old boy was critically injured in a house fire Friday in Spencer.
A press release from Spencer Fire-Rescue says crews were called to 101 DeLoss Court around 9:30 am and upon arriving found heavy fire coming from the front of the residence. They also learned a child was missing. Some bystanders attempted to rescue the child but were unsuccessful due to the intensity of the fire. Firefighters placed two attack lines into service and knocked the fire down. Some firefighters then entered the home and located the boy. He was taken to Spencer Hospital and was transferred by air ambulance to Gillette Children’s Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota where he was listed in critical condition at last report.
Extreme fire and smoke damage was reported throughout the home. A neighboring residence at 103 DeLoss Court sustained fire damage to the garage and smoke damage throughout the interior.
The release says it’s believed the fire started in the living room on the residence at 101 DeLoss Court but the cause couldn’t be determined due to extent of the damage.
Firefighters were on the scene nearly two hours.
The Spencer Police Department, Clay County Sheriff’s Office, Black Hills Energy, Spencer Municipal Utilities, Spencer Hospital paramedics, Iowa State Patrol and the State Fire Marshal assisted on the scene.
