An art contest that began in Sac City is now blooming in Storm Lake.
Storm Lake United has accepted the challenge to join the “Our Town is Cooler Than Yours” flower manhole art contest—an idea launched earlier this month by Sac City Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Crystal Hanrahan.
For Storm Lake United Executive Director Laura Hanks, the project is personal.
Hanks grew up in Sac City and spent more than a decade leading the chamber’s Main Street program before moving to Storm Lake.
Hanks says Storm Lake United is working with the Hometown Pride committee and the City of Storm Lake to plan the project. While Sac City artists are already painting, Storm Lake’s timeline will stretch into spring to allow for grant funding, donations, and careful preparation.
Hanks believes the contest is more than just art—it’s a way to unify communities across Iowa.
And while she’s proud of her Sac City roots, Hanks couldn’t resist a playful jab at her hometown.
