Electrical Issue Sparks Garage Fire In Storm Lake

Another red bulb has turned white on the Storm Lake Fire Department’s holiday wreath, following a weekend garage fire on West Fifth Street.

Fire crews were dispatched at 12:55 p.m. Saturday to 1003 West Fifth Street after a passerby reported smoke and flames. On arrival, firefighters found the southwest corner of a single‑unit garage attached to the residence burning.

Engine 72 launched a quick attack, while crews from Aerial 71 assisted with suppression and overhaul. Power to the property was secured, and investigators were called to the scene. Using thermal imaging cameras, firefighters checked for any remaining hot spots or areas of concern.

Investigators determined the fire was accidental, caused by an electrical issue. No injuries were reported.

The Storm Lake Police Department and Buena Vista Regional Medical Center ambulance crews assisted at the scene.

The Storm Lake Fire Department notes this incident marks the third time this month a red bulb has been replaced with white on its holiday wreath—a tradition meant to remind residents of fire safety during the season.
