BVU Digital Media Students Earn 25 ICMA Honors

Buena Vista University students and faculty attended the Iowa College Media Association (ICMA) conference on February 6 and brought home 25 statewide accolades, including a major award for First Amendment advocacy.

Carter Soyer, a senior Digital Media major from Glidden, Iowa, was named the Pat Pisarik Student Journalist of the Year.

“Carter’s leadership and work ethic have been outstanding across all media platforms at BVU, so it is especially gratifying to see him recognized with this top statewide honor,” said Dr. Andrea Frantz, Professor of Digital Media.

Soyer’s nomination required an essay, a portfolio of media work he had produced in the last year, and an interview with ICMA board members. “I am honored to be selected for this award, and very thankful to everyone who has been part of this journey thus far,” said Soyer.

Iowa colleges and universities with student media outlets annually participate in the ICMA student journalism contest, which is judged by newspaper, radio, and television professionals.

BVU students earned seven first-place awards throughout the evening in categories such as video long-form documentary, corporate video, podcast series, and audio public service announcement, to name a few.
