Buena Vista County Elects City, School Leaders; List of Area Unofficial Results

Buena Vista County voters weighed in on city and school leadership yesterday, with unofficial results now in.

In Storm Lake, Maggie Martinez and Richard Riner secured the two four-year city council seats, earning 502 and 404 votes respectively. Dalton Walker finished with 393. For the two-year council term, Don Piercy Jr. ran unopposed and received 581 votes.

Storm Lake’s mayoral race saw no official candidates, but 590 write-in votes were cast. County Auditor Sue Lloyd says her office will tally those write-ins later today.

On the school board side, incumbents Erika Dierking and Steven Mills retained their seats with 743 and 658 votes respectively.

Elsewhere in the county:

  • Alta voters elected Desi Suter as mayor and Alyson Sievers and Laura Millard to the city council.
  • In Newell, Justin Lyman won the mayor’s race, while Larry Nielsen and Stephen Taylor led the council vote.
  • Sioux Rapids elected Michael Katschman as mayor and Kevin Thompson to fill a council vacancy.

In the Alta-Aurelia school district, Thomas Hinkeldey and Jayden Van Berkum won the two at-large seats.

Countywide voter turnout was just over 20 percent. All results remain unofficial until canvassed.
