The planting of crops in Iowa made significant strides last week, and corn is beginning to emerge.
Iowa’s crop progress report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture shows that corn planting more than doubled, with 70-percent now planted statewide. That’s 12 days ahead of last year, and one week ahead of the five-year average. 78-percent of corn has been planted in northwest Iowa.
Six-percent of corn has emerged statewide, which is six days ahead of last year, but a day behind the average. Three-percent of northwest Iowa corn has emerged.
The amount of soybeans planted tripled in the last week to 49-percent, which is 11 days ahead of last year, and just over a week ahead of the five-year average. 43-percent of northwest Iowa soybeans have been planted.
39-percent of topsoil in northwest Iowa is either short or very short of moisture, with 60-percent adequate, and one-percent surplus.
There were 5.4 days suitable for fieldwork in northwest Iowa last week, and 5.7 days were suitable statewide.
