Alta Library Eyes $1.25M Bond for New Facility

The Alta Community Library is hoping to turn a page this fall—with plans for a new 4,200 square foot facility in the city park pending a $1.25 million bond vote on Nov. 4.

Library Director Gigi Nelson says the proposed building would triple the size of their previous space and finally give Alta a library of its own.

Currently housed in the VFW Hall off Highway 7, the library is operating with 500 fewer square feet than before. That’s made it difficult to host popular programs like story time, summer reading, and visits from the Blank Park Zoo and Buena Vista County Naturalist, says Nelson.

The new design includes dedicated space for materials, seating, and a conference room—plus an outdoor classroom that Nelson says would expand programming even further.

Informational meetings are scheduled throughout the fall, starting Sept. 28, and continuing Oct. 4 in conjunction with Alta Hometown Days, Oct. 12, and Nov. 2.

Nelson says the library’s mission is rooted in lifelong learning and community connection—and that this proposed building is a step toward both.
