Storm Lake History Walk

August 22 @ 11:00am - 12:30pm

A new Storm Lake event will give participants a chance to enjoy healthy exercise while learning about the history of the community.
Buena Vista County Public Health is joining forces with the Buena Vista County Historical Society to present the first Storm Lake History Walk, Saturday, August 22, 11 a.m. The event is open to everyone, free of charge.
The walk begins and ends at the Buena Vista County Historical Society Museum, 214 West 5th Street. The first stop will be a rare opportunity to visit the Prairie Log House and Elk Center One-Room Schoolhouse. These landmarks are seldom open to the public, and are outfitted in authentic period style.
The walk will look around the downtown and Lake Avenue area, passing such landmarks as Santa’s Castle, the Metcalf House, the former Post Office, classic lower Lake Avenue homes, and much more. Participants will learn about sites from Storm Lake’s past – hotels, theaters, an opera house, a Sanitorium and railroad depots.
The walk will cover about one mile, at a leisurely pace. Not only is walking a great way to explore your community and meet new people, it’s a powerful way to boost your health. Regular walking helps your heart, builds bone strength and protects joints, lowers blood sugar, and is even shown to improve your mood.
If you can’t make the walk, you’ll still be able to pick up a map of the route at the historical museum for a self-guided tour at your convenience.
