Storm Lake Man Sentenced to Prison for Breaking Into Apartment and Committing Assault

A Storm Lake man was sentenced yesterday (Tues) in Buena Vista County District Court to five years in prison on a burglary charge.

Last Friday, 23-year-old Mach Nyaw pleaded guilty to 3rd Degree Burglary, a class D felony. The prison term will be served at the Iowa Department of Corrections.

Nyaw was arrested following a disturbance report at an apartment in the 11 hundred block of North Ontario Street in Storm Lake on March 4th of this year. Nyaw allegedly forced his way into the apartment and assaulted an occupant inside the unit. When the occupant attempted to call 911 for help, Nyaw allegedly grabbed the phone to prevent the victim from calling. Another occupant was able to call 911. No injuries were reported.

Last week in BV District Court, Nyaw was sentenced to up to five years in prison after his probation was revoked on a forgery charge. Over two years ago, Nyaw attempted to pass a fraudulent check at the El Mexicano II store in Storm Lake.
