The Buena Vista County Attorney’s Office took part in the Iowa Sexual Assault Response Conference in Ames.
Agencies from across the state took part in the event on Tuesday through Thursday of this week. The conference showcased a variety of talented and experienced professionals, including the detectives who investigated the serial sexual predator in the Netflix series “Unbelievable.”
The Buena Vista County Attorney was represented at the conference by Assistant County Attorney Ashley Herrig, Victim/Witness Coordinator Valerie Anspach, and Investigator Chet Hartwell.
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. It’s estimated that two in three sexual assaults go unreported across the nation. The Iowa legislature has taken steps to help victims who struggle to report sexual abuse by extending the statute of limitations for many sexual offenses.
The BV County Attorney wants everyone who has been a victim of sexual abuse and hasn’t reported their story to law enforcement to reach out and seek justice.
