The State Auditor’s Office has issued an advisory to Iowans regarding a potential phone scam.
According to State Auditor Rob Sand, the caller in the scam identifies themselves as a representative of the Iowa Auditor of State Office. A concerned citizen reportedly notified the office last Wednesday that they had received a phone call from a person inquiring about their mortgage. The caller also stated that they knew the concerned citizen’s name, address, and height.
Sand says that the Auditor of State Office will NEVER call someone regarding their mortgage or personal finances. Sand says the Iowa Attorney General Consumer Protection Division has been notified.
The Federal Trade Commission says scammers might pretend to be from a well-known organization or agency like the Internal Revenue Service, Social Security Administration, or Medicare. These agencies will NEVER call someone to request financial information. Scammers also often claim that someone has won a prize. Citizens are reminded to NEVER give out personal or financial information to a random caller.
