On a night in which he became Storm Lake’s all time assist leader Cam Boyd scored a game high 20 points and the Tornado boys basketball team avenged their only loss of the year defeating Carroll 66-61 in a game played Thursday at Tornado Fieldhouse.
The win puts Storm Lake in their first substate final since 2012. The Tornadoes will take on Gilbert Monday at a site to be determined at 7pm.
The Tornadoes scored the final six points of the first half to grab a 37-31 lead at the half and then built an eleven point lead 49-38 with three minutes to go in the 3rd quarter only to have Carroll come back and tie the game 51-51 early in the 4th quarter.
Trey Boettcher would then hit a huge 3-pointer to put Storm Lake ahead 54-51 and eventually The Tornadoes would build their lead back to 61-53 with two minutes to play. The Tigers would pull back within three 62-59 after a Mac Collison 3-pointer with :55 seconds left.
Down the stretch Storm Lake, which made 11-of-20 free throws in the game, would have Garbieno Weno and Cam Boyd go 4-for-4 at the line in the final :22 seconds to seal the win.
Boyd, who made 7-of-10 shots in the game, surpassed the 260 assist total of 1980 graduate Tad Wiess. Jaidyn Coon added 16 points. The Tornadoes made 24-of-52 shots for 46-percent shooting and made 7-of-23 three point attempts.

Carroll made 10-of-27 three pointers and shot 39-percent overall for the game and they were led in scoring by Collison’s 17 points and Miles Nuzback had 15 and the Tigers finish the year 10-13.

Storm Lake, now 21-1, will face a Gilbert team (15-8) that beat Humboldt 69-46 Thursday night. Monday’s game will be broadcast on 92.9 KKIA and video streamed at stormlakeradio.com
