This is the 100th season of boys basketball at Storm Lake High School and the program plans to celebrate that milestone this Friday, February 7 prior to its varsity game vs Spencer.
Former Tornado boys basketball players and coaches are invited to attend the girls/boys doubleheader on Friday at SLHS. They will be recognized on the court between the varsity games.
“We wanted to take this opportunity to honor as many former Tornado players and coaches as we can,” said current head coach Evan Franzmeier. “This program has a tremendous history and 100 seasons is a great milestone. We look forward to seeing lots of former Tornadoes on Friday night.”
Through Monday of this week, the Storm Lake’s boys basketball program has an all-time record of 1,141 wins and 866 losses, a 57 percent winning percentage.
The Tornadoes have won 15 Lakes Conference championships, made 10 trips to the State Tournament and earned state titles in 1968 and 1980.
The current Storm Lake team has a 12-1 record (through Monday) and recently clinched this season’s Lakes Conference championship.
Tornado fans are encouraged to arrive early on Friday evening as there will likely be a large crowd in attendance. The girls game starts at 6 pm. Former SLHS boys basketball players and coaches are asked to arrive early, as well, so there will be time to organize them to assemble on the court between games.
